USB-A? USB-C? USB 3? Thunderbolt? What does it all mean?

Remember when USB just meant that simple, flat USB connector you plugged into your computer? Well, a lot has changed in the 20+ years since USB was created. The computer industry, lead by Apple being all in with USB-C, is now standardizing on a single USB connector for the foreseeable future to make things much simpler.
